Droupadi Murmu is the newly elected president of India. She is the 15th president of India. She started serving as president on 25th July 2022. She hails from Bharatiya JanataPart. She is the first president who comes from a tribal community. She is also the second-ever women president. She has written history by being the youngest president. She was also the 9th governor of Jharkhand.
Early Life of Droupadi
Droupadi was born on 20th June 1958 in Uparbeda, Odisha. She was born to Biranchi Narayan Tudu, her father who is a framer & a Sarpanch of the village. Initially, she was named Puti Tudu but her name was changed many times. Murmu did her schooling at Girl’s High School. She graduated from Rama Devi Women’s College.
She was a junior assistant under the government of Odisha. Later she switched jobs and for the next three years, she became a teacher at Sri Aurobindo Integral Education & Research Centre in Rairangpur.
Political Career
In 1997, She was elected as a councilor of Rairangpur Nagar Panchayat. She fought the election as an independent candidate from the women’s reserved seat. She then went ahead win the elections of the Odisha Legislative Assembly in 2000. She also won Nilkanth Award for Best MLA of Odisha in 2007. She was the governor of Jharkhand since 18 May 2015.
She was nominated as the candidate for President by the BJP party. Opposition parties nominated Yashwant Sinha as their candidate for president. She scored a clear majority on July 21, 2022, with 64% of electoral votes in total.
