Mamata Banerjee is a politician who is currently the eighth chief minister of West Bengal. She is on the post of chief minister since 2011. She was the first woman chief minister of West Bengal. She is also the founder of the All-India Trinamool Congress. She is known as Didi, elder sister.

Early Life of Mamata

Mamata was born on 5 January 1995 in Calcutta. She hails from a Bengali Hindu family. She was born to Promileswar Banerjee, her father & Gayetri Devi, her mother. She completed her schooling at Deshbandhu Sishu Sikshalay. She did her graduation from the University of Calcutta. She has done other degrees also like a degree in education & Law.

She got involved in politics even before becoming a major. When she was in Jogamaya Devi College she founded Chhatra Parishad Union.

The career of Mamata Banerjee

Mamata started her political career with Congress party in 1970. She became recognized in 1975 when she was protesting against Jayaprakash & for that, she danced in his car. She quickly rose in rank & in the 1984 elections, she became one of the youngest members of the parliament. She was also appointed as a union minister in 1991, during the tenure of P.V. Narasimha Rao. Banerjee has also served as Minister of Railways. She has also been in the post of Minister of Coal & Minister of Human Resource.

She became so famous for opposing industrialization & following a communist approach. She opposed the formation of Special Economic Zones on the cost of agriculture & farmer. She won the 2011 West Bengal elections by defeating the Communist Party of India, a 34 years old party. This was the longest-serving democratic communist government. She lost in her constituency, even after being a chief minister. She challenged the result of the Nandigram Constituency in the High Court. She won the 2021 west Bengal assembly polls.

Controversies

When Dogra Prasad Saroj, an MP was protesting against the Women’s Reservation Bill, Banerjee holds him by his collar and dragged him out of the Lok Sabha.
Once she was not allowed to speak about the Bangladeshi’s infiltration in West Bengal which infuriated her and she threw her resignation on the speaker’s face.
She was once heavily criticized for her remarks on women and reasons for rape.
She once banned the Durga Pooja celebration as the next day was Muharram, although this decision was overruled by High Court by stating that it is a move to appease minorities.
