Kareena Kapoor is her younger sister, who is also an Indian actress. Her paternal grandfather was Raj Kapoor. Prithviraj Kapoor was her great-grandfather. Rishi Kapoor and Rajiv Kapoor are her uncles, and Neetu Singh and Ritu Nanda are her aunts. Ranbir Kapoor is her cousin. She is of twin descent, Punjabi Hindu (from her father’s side) and (Sindhi Hindu) (from her mother’s side).
She grew up watching the work of Sridevi and Madhuri Dixit. She considers them her inspiration and has been passionate about acting since childhood. She studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School and later studied at Sophia college.
In 1991, at 17, she debuted in Hindi cinema with the movie Prem Qaidi. During her initial years of acting, she gave continuous flops. The first hit was by Raja Babu, opposite Govinda.
