P.chidambaram is an Indian Political figure and served as Four times union minister of finance . He is currently serving as a member of parliament, Rajya Sabha. Chidambaram is the author of several published books.
Early life :
Chidambaram was born to Kandanur L. Ct. L. Palaniappa Chettiar and Lakshmi Achi in Kanadukathan in the Sivaganga district in Tamil Nadu, India. His maternal grandfather was Raja Sir Annamalai Chettiar, a wealthy merchant, and banker from Chettinad.
He studied at Madras Christian College Higher School in Chennai and did his bachelor’s degree in statics from Presidency College. He completed his Bachelor’s degree in Law from Madras Law College and MBA from Harvard Business school.
Chidambaram has 2 brothers and 1 sister . He enrolled in Madras High court as a lawyer becoming a senior advocate in 1984, He practiced in the Supreme high court and various courts in India.
Political Career :
Chidambaram was elected from the Sivagangai constituency of Tamil Nadu in 1984 . He was Union leader of MRF and worked to become Tamil Nadu Youth congress president.
He served as Union Minster during Rajiv Gandhi’s government in 1985 as Deputy of commerce.
He was elevated to the rank of Minister of State in the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions in January 1986. In October of the same year, he was appointed to the Ministry of Home Affairs as Minister of State for Internal Security. He continued to hold both offices until general elections were called in 1989.
His 1997 budget is still remembered as the dream budget for the Indian economy.
Personal Life :
Chidambaram’s mother, Lakshmi Acchi, daughter of Annamalai Chettiarwho is the founder of Annamalai University and United India Insurance Company Limited.
His brother, Ramaswami Chettiar, was the founder of the Indian Bank and the co-founder of another major bank, the Indian Overseas Bank.
He is married to Nalini Chidambaram, she is a senior advocate practicing in the Madras High Court and the Supreme Court of India. He has a son, Karti P. Chidambaram, a member of the Congress Party’s AICC, who is active in Tamil Nadu state politics. Karti is married to Dr. Srinidhi Rangarajan. Karti and Srinidhi have a daughter, Aditi Nalini Chidambaram.
