LEONARDO DI CAPRIO, full name Leonardo Wilhelm DiCaprio, (born November 11, 1974 in Los Angeles, California, United States), is an American actor and producer who rose to prominence in the 1990s as one of Hollywood’s leading performers, known for his portrayals of unconventional and complex characters.
EARLY LIFE OF LEONARDO
DiCaprio began acting at the age of five, when he appeared on the children’s television show Romper Room, and as a teenager, he appeared in numerous commercials and educational films. He began appearing on television shows such as The New Lassie and Roseanne in 1990, and in 1991 he was cast in a recurring role on Growing Pains. That same year, DiCaprio made his feature film debut in Critters 3, a low-budget horror film. DiCaprio made his breakthrough in 1992, when he beat out 400 other candidates to play opposite Robert De Niro in This Boy’s Life (1993). DiCaprio received positive feedback, and he was nominated for an Academy Award for best supporting actor for his portrayal of a teenager with an intellectual disability in his next film, What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Following that were several independent films, including The Basketball Diaries (1995) and Total Eclipse (1995), both of which focused on poet Arthur Rimbaud’s homosexual relationship with Paul Verlaine.
CAREER OF LEONARDO
DiCaprio began to attract a wider audience with more mainstream films in the mid-1990s. After starring in Baz Luhrmann’s modern retelling of William Shakespeare’s Romeo + Juliet (1996), he became a teen heartthrob. With the release of James Cameron’s epic Titanic in 1997, DiCaprio shot to international stardom. His good looks and moving portrayal of Jack Dawson, a penniless artist who falls in love with an upper-class passenger (played by Kate Winslet), contributed to Titanic becoming one of the most successful films of all time.
Despite receiving numerous offers to appear in blockbusters and other mainstream films, DiCaprio chose roles that featured the complex characters that had come to define his career. He appeared in The Beach, a dark film about a young backpacker’s search for paradise, in 2000. He appeared in Martin Scorsese’s Gangs of New York, a period piece about gangsters in New York City in the mid-1800s, two years later.
