About – (Manoj Bajpai) Bandit Queen (1995) was Bajpayee’s first major part after his brief appearance in Govind Nihalani’s Drohkaal (1994). (1994). The film’s casting director, Tigmanshu Dhulia, recommended him to director Shekhar Kapur. The part of dacoit Vikram Mallah in the film, which went to Nirmal Pandey, was originally intended for Bajpai. In the film, Bajpayee plays the role of dacoit Mann Singh. It was about this period that he starred in the TV series Kalakaar, directed by Hansal Mehta and Imtihaan (Doordarshan).
When Mahesh Bhatt gave Bajpayee a role in the Doordarshan soap opera Swabhimaan (1995), the actor was on the verge of stardom but barely scraping by.
The following films that Bajpayee was in had supporting roles for him were Dastak (1996) and Tamanna (1997). Bajpayee was discovered by director Ram Gopal Varma when he was looking for an actor for a small part in the comedy film Daud (1997). When filming was over, Varma told Bajpayee he regretted offering him such a small part.
