Ted Tenaglia’s Route Into Fire Service Training and Education
How does one enter into the firefighting profession? In order to become a firefighter, you must take classes and go through formal training programs. Mr. Tenaglia became a firefighter by earning Firefighter I & II Certifications (the course will be offered in two parts) and an Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) License through the Florida State Fire College in 2020. Both the Firefighter I and Firefighter II certifications require rigorous class time, an intense fitness routine, and performance testing to obtain. In addition to being a firefighter with the City of Gainesville, Ted. Tenaglia continued his education by earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Fire and Emergency Services at the University of Florida, where he graduated Cum Laude. Balancing college coursework and being an active firefighter shows the commitment needed to perform in this profession successfully.

Ted Tenaglia reflected on his experience and expressed the continual need for learning and flexibility as a firefighter. Given the numerous different situations that can arise in a fire department, firefighters need to be able to shift quickly between firefighting, medical emergencies, and rescue operations. He stressed the importance of working together, receiving continual training, and having the support of their department in order to continue to be as productive and safe as possible. From Tenaglia’s personal perspective, he demonstrates how a career in firefighting requires an extraordinary commitment over the long term.
