Male infertility is a health condition wherein the male cannot make the female partner pregnant. It contributes to nearly 40% of infertility cases. Therefore, it can be safe to say that one out of three cases is on account of male infertility as against the earlier assumption of that infertility is mainly a woman’s issue. Also, across the globe, it affects nearly 180 million couples.
Dr Hrishikesh Pai, founder and director of Budget Fertility Clinic, asserts that male infertility is rising, and various treatments and procedures exist to resolve this issue. Therefore, there is no reason for males to feel disheartened or disappointed as there are many possibilities and avenues to resolve these issues, such as sperm retrieval, ICSI, assisted reproduction techniques, sperm freezing and so on. Therefore, we have established the Budget Fertility Clinic to offer all possible advice, treatment and procedures to overcome male infertility.’
The main reasons for male infertility are abnormal sperm production, low sperm production, sperm blockages, chronic illness, lifestyle habits, and so on. In addition, at times, males face issues in sexual functioning such as less sexual desire, erectile dysfunction, difficulty in ejaculation, recurring respiratory infections, lumps or swellings in the testicle area, less sperm count or history of penis, scrotum or groin injury, to name the most prominent ones. However, suitable treatment is advisable only after diagnosing the exact reason or cause of infertility.
The available treatment options for male infertility are hormonal medications if there is a hormonal disorder and surgeries to fix issues with male genitals, such as twisted or swollen veins in the scrotum or blockages in sperm transport.
Also, various assisted reproductive techniques are available that boost the sperm towards fertilization, even in cases of poor sperm count or abnormal sperm. The sperm is collected through ejaculation or via a minor procedure. These sperms are stored, processed and used during various types of ART procedures such as Intrauterine Insemination (IUI), In-Vitro Fertilization (IVF), and Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) are the most recommended treatments
The Intrauterine Insemination (IUI) procedure entails injecting the sperm directly within the uterus for fertilization at ovulation. Suitable medications are prescribed to the female partner for the release of large number of eggs. Only if there is a viable sperm an IVF cycle is recommended, as it is possible to mix them with multiple eggs under laboratory supervision for fertilization. Post fertilization, the embryo is placed in the uterus.
Intracytoplasmic Sperm Injection (ICSI) is recommended in cases of low or abnormal sperm count. In this method, the IVF specialist uses a tiny needle to inject a single sperm into the egg, which is then implanted in the uterus if fertilized.
