Hirdesh Singh, popularly known by his stage name Yo Yo Honey Singh, is a famous Indian singer, songwriter, producer, actor, and rapper from Punjab. He was the one who initiated rap culture in Indian music history.

EARLY LIFE

Hirdesh Singh was born on 15 March 1983 in a Punjabi family in Hoshiarpur, Punjab. He is the elder son of his family and has a younger sister Sneha Singh. He graduated from Guru Nanak Public school, Pitampura, Delhi; he moved to Delhi in childhood. Since childhood, he has been very much interested in music. He used to sing devotional songs in gurudwara at the age of just 13.

CAREER

Honey Singh made his debut as a singer in 2005 when his rap was featured in Bill Singh’s (Indian Singer) album Peshi. In 2009, Honey Singh started gaining popularity when he rapped for the music album “The Next Level” by the famous Punjabi singer diljit Dosanjh. His song ” Lak 28 Kudi da” with Diljit Dosanjh topped the BBC Asian Download Charts in 2011. He immensely gained popularity around the nation when he released his album ” International Villager”, which featured the party song Angrezi Beat ( featuring Gippy Grewal), Dope Shope, Gabru ( featuring J-star) and “Brown Rang”, which became a massive hit after its release. In the same year, he again won the hearts of music lovers with his song “High Heels”.Because of his immense success, he was offered many pieces in Bollywood. His song ” Angrezi Beat” was featured in the film Cocktail. And his songs such as party all night, brown rang, Makhna, Chaar Botal Vodka, Sunny Sunny, lungi dance and many more have been repeatedly played in clubs, parties, and weddings till now. He has also acted in Punjabi movies, ” Mirza- The Untold Story”, “Tu Mera 22 Main Tera 22 “, “Zorawar”, etc.

The “yo-yo” in Honey Singh’s name, which means “yours own”, was influenced by the African American slang of his friend. He married Shalini Talwar on 23 January 2011. In 2021, Shalini filed for divorce in the Tis Hajari court of Delhi, accusing Honey Singh and his parents of domestic violence. The actor was also accused of alcoholism, drug abuse, and adultery by his wife.
