The funeral of former Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Singh, held on December 27, 2024, at Nigam Bodh Ghat, has ignited a political storm. Several leaders, including Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, have strongly criticized the government for what they perceive as a lack of respect for one of India’s most distinguished statesmen.
Rahul Gandhi Expresses Outrage
Congress leader Rahul Gandhi took to social media platform X to express his dismay. He wrote, “Dr. Manmohan Singh, a great son of Bharat Mata and the first Sikh Prime Minister of India, was humiliated by being cremated at Nigam Bodh Ghat. For a decade, he served as the Prime Minister and transformed India into an economic powerhouse. His policies continue to support the underprivileged and marginalized even today.”
Gandhi also pointed out the precedent set for former Prime Ministers, stating that their funerals have traditionally been held at dedicated memorial sites. “This ensures the public can pay their final respects without inconvenience. Dr. Singh deserves the highest honor, including Bharat Ratna and a proper memorial site,” he added. He called upon the government to show respect for the former leader and the Sikh community.
Congress Seeks Dedicated Memorial
Prior to the funeral, Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge had written to the central government, requesting land for a dedicated memorial for Dr. Singh. In his letter, Kharge emphasized that Dr. Singh’s contributions warranted recognition similar to other former Prime Ministers. Kharge reportedly also discussed the issue with Union Home Minister Amit Shah.
Support from Other Political Leaders
The controversy has drawn support from unexpected quarters. The Shiromani Akali Dal, a traditional rival of Congress, has backed the demand for a proper memorial for Dr. Singh. Former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal also expressed shock over the funeral arrangements, stating on X, “I am stunned that former PM Dr. Manmohan Singh’s last rites were held at Nigam Bodh Ghat. All former PMs have been cremated at Raj Ghat. The BJP government couldn’t even allocate 1,000 square yards for his memorial.”
Government Faces Backlash
The government’s decision has led to widespread criticism. Many argue that Dr. Singh, who played a pivotal role in India’s economic liberalization and served as Prime Minister from 2004 to 2014, deserved a farewell befitting his stature. Critics have also pointed out the symbolic importance of such gestures in honoring the contributions of national leaders.
Public Sentiment and Future Actions
The debate has sparked public outrage, with many questioning the government’s priorities. The Congress party has vowed to continue its fight for a memorial for Dr. Singh, stating that they will not rest until the former PM’s legacy is appropriately honored.
As the nation mourns the loss of a visionary leader, the controversy surrounding his funeral arrangements has opened a broader conversation about how India honors its statesmen. Whether this will lead to a change in policies or practices remains to be seen.
