EARLY LIFE
Amala Ratna Zandile Dlamini was born on 21 October, 1995, into an artistic family in the Tarzana of Los Angeles, California. Her father, Dumisani Dlamini, is a South African singer of Zulu ancestry. Her mother, Deborah Sawyer, is an American graphic designer of Ashkenazi Jewish lineage. Dlamini relocated from Tarzana to Rye, New York, shortly after her birth, where she spent five years living with her maternal grandmother. Dlamini spent four years practising Hinduism at the Sai Anantam Ashram, a commune in the Santa Monica mountains, after moving there with her mother and brother when she was eight. Being some of the only mixed-race kids in the neighbourhood, Dlamini and her brother also encountered extreme racism.
CAREER
Doja Cat, who had previously experimented with music on SoundCloud at just 17, released her debut single, “So High,” in 2012. Two years later, she registered with RCA Records as part of a joint venture with Dr Luke’s vanity label Kemosabe Records. On her record label, Doja released Amala, her debut studio album, but sadly it didn’t fare well on the charts. Later on in her career, hits like “Go To Town” and “Tia Tamera (ft. Rico Nasty)” did assist in establishing her as an artist. The song “Mooo!” by Doja Cat, which is currently one of her most popular tracks online, was released together with a green-screen home music video with the performer dressed as a cow. Hot Pink, the singer’s second studio album, is released to glowing praise from reviewers and immediate streaming. This album boasts Doja Cat’s reputation with songs like “Say So” and “Streets,” showcasing her superb rapping skills and upbeat personality across all 12 tracks.
Doja Cat releases the music video for “Say So,” destined to become a TikTok hit. At the MTV Video Music Awards, she was named Best New Artist. There are 11 Grammy nominations for Planet Her, including Album of the Year, which is the highest honour. The vocalist is nominated in several categories, including Record of the Year and Song of the Year.
