He is famous for his role as Elijah Mikaelson in his favourite supernatural television drama, The Vampire Diaries. He also played the same position in its spin-off, The Originals. Gillies was born in Canada. His parents were from New Zealand. When he was 5 years of age, his parents moved back to their native land, New Zealand. Then they moved to Invercargill. After that, they moved to Hamilton. His father was a paediatrician by profession. His mother was a nurse.
In 2001, he moved to Sydney, Australia. There he worked as a waiter and a dishwasher until he moved to Los Angeles, USA.
CAREER
He started his career by playing roles in several Auckland Theatre Company productions. Then he landed a 2 season lead role in a television drama named Street Legal. He realized that his acting career was limited to New Zealand. So he began to explore more options in Sydney and Canada. Then he moved to Los Angeles and was cast in the movies Spiderman 2 & Bride and Prejudice.

On August 8 2004, Gillies got married to Rachael Leigh Cook. She was an American Actress. The couple together has a daughter named Charlotte. She was born in September 2013. They also have a son named Theodore. He was born in April 2015. In 2017, in an interview, Gillies said he pursued a vasectomy to prevent the birth of a third child.
In 2019, on June 13, the couple mutually decided to separate, and they also wanted it to be as discreet for the sake of their children. In 2020, Gillies filed for divorce from Cook. The divorce was finalized in 2021.
