In vitro fertilization (IVF) is a method in which the egg and sperm are fertilized outside the female body. In an IVF cycle, the egg or ovum is removed from the ovary and stored in the laboratory, wherein it is allowed to fertilize with the sperm under controlled conditions. Then, the fertilized egg is placed within the uterus. If required, preimplantation genetic testing is done to ensure the birth of a healthy baby. The IUI procedure is slightly different. When a woman is ovulating, sperm are placed directly into her uterus. This procedure is known as artificial insemination.
The main difference between IUI and IVF is the ovum is internally fertilized by sperm in IUI, whereas in IVF, the ovum is externally fertilized by sperm in a lab. According to Dr Hrishikesh Pai, the IVF procedure involves injecting sperm inside the ovum to form an embryo which is then inserted into the uterus for conception. On the other hand, in IUI, the male partner’s or the donor’s semen is inseminated in the uterus for conception.
