Delhi: The Supreme Court has granted interim bail to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal till June 1 in the excise policy case. However, the Court said it will soon pass a detailed order on the matter.
The ED had arrested Kejriwal on March 21 in the Delhi excise policy case. On Thursday, the Enforcement Directorate had opposed the move to grant interim bail to Kejriwal, saying “any special concession” to him would be “anathema to the rule of law and equality… which will create two distinct classes in the country, i.e., the common people, who are bound by the rule of law as well as the laws of the country, and politicians who can seek exemption from the laws”.
The ED said, “The right to campaign for election is neither a fundamental right, nor a constitutional right nor a legal right.” Also, the ED said that as per its information, “no political leader has been granted interim bail for campaigning, even if he is not a contesting candidate.” After the ED filed the affidavit, AAP said in a press release, “The legal team of Delhi Chief Minister and AAP National Convenor Shri Arvind Kejriwal has strongly objected to the affidavit filed by the Enforcement Directorate opposing interim bail in the Supreme Court.”
