The Central Crime Branch of the Bengaluru Police arrested Congress leader and former councilor Abdul Rakib Zakir early Thursday morning in the riot case. This is the second major arrest in the last fortnight after former Bangalore Mayor and Congress leader R Sampat Raj. Zakir was missing from the police since his interrogation in October.
Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sandeep Patil said that the Congress leader will be detained and questioned.
Violence erupted in parts of Bengaluru on August 11 from a post released on internet media by Naveen Kumar, nephew of Congress MLA Akhand Srinivas Murthy. Police is investigating this matter. He has filed an 850-page chargesheet in the court.
In the chargesheet, Congress leader R Sampat Raj has been accused. Apart from this, the name of Abdul Rakib Zakir is also included as accused.
Police say Sampat Raj was among those who were aware of the violence, but did not reveal this to the police. Raj and Zakir have been questioned by the police earlier. In this case, another Congress leader Kalim Pasha has also been arrested.
