With the 2026 Indian Premier League season on the horizon, Chennai Super Kings have officially launched their preparations in Chennai, and the early visuals from camp suggest a team eager to reclaim dominance.
Former captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni and current skipper Ruturaj Gaikwad were at the forefront as the five-time champions kicked off their first practice session on Sunday. The squad assembled at the franchise’s High-Performance Centre, where several Indian domestic players reported for duty to begin the initial phase of training.
Leadership Setting the Tone
Dhoni, who continues to be the emotional and tactical backbone of the franchise, was seen batting in the nets with trademark composure and sharp focus. In a nearby lane, Gaikwad displayed fluent stroke play, appearing in rhythm as he gears up for his leadership responsibilities in the upcoming season.
The presence of both leaders at the very start of camp underlines the seriousness with which CSK are approaching IPL 2026. While Dhoni’s on-field role may have evolved over time, his influence within the squad remains unmistakable.
Domestic Core Gets to Work
The opening phase of the camp features primarily Indian domestic players. Among those in attendance were Ayush Mhatre, Mukesh Choudhary, Rahul Chahar, Urvil Patel, Ramakrishna Ghosh, and Sarfaraz Khan. The franchise also welcomed new signings Prashant Veer and Kartik Sharma, who immediately joined training drills and began integrating into the squad environment.
Training footage shared by CSK showed Sarfaraz closely observing Dhoni’s net session, perhaps absorbing cues from one of the game’s finest finishers. Gaikwad, meanwhile, looked assured and confident, striking the ball cleanly during extended batting drills.
Awaiting International Reinforcements
The current camp phase focuses on domestic players, with several international stars yet to join due to national commitments. Indian internationals Sanju Samson and Shivam Dube, who are currently involved in the T20 World Cup, are expected to link up with the franchise after the tournament concludes on March 7.
Additionally, Shreyas Gopal, fresh from Karnataka’s Ranji Trophy final campaign, will report to the squad once his domestic commitments are fully wrapped up.
Early Signs of Intent
For a franchise that prides itself on structure, continuity, and meticulous preparation, the early start to training sends a clear message. The blend of experienced campaigners and emerging talent points toward a well-balanced squad aiming to build momentum long before the season begins.
As IPL 2026 approaches, Chennai Super Kings appear determined to combine legacy with fresh ambition — and judging by the intensity of their opening session, they are already moving at full throttle.
