Controversy – The inspiration for The Good Maharaja was Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji Jadeja, who based his novel on the life of the Maharaja Jam Sahib of Nawanagar, Gujarat, who, before India’s independence, housed and educated about a thousand Polish children who had been evacuated from the USSR to India to avoid German bombings during World War II.
Omung Kumar of Legend Studios was slated to direct the movie. The Maharaja Digvijaysinhji Ranjitsinhji’s daughters sent a cease and desist letter to the film’s producers, Omung Kumar and Sandeep Singh, co-owners of Legend Studios, after the first trailer was released.
The girls’ guardian filed a lawsuit stating, “Since the Maharaja was a well-known figure, any distortion of the truth will have a negative impact on his reputation.
Since they weren’t asked for permission before filming began, our clients aren’t happy about it.” According to Sandeep Singh, “this legal action against the film is merely an attempt to garner publicity by the Maharaja’s family,” hence the royal family’s objections to the movie are baseless.
