Ratan Tata is an industrialist and one of the biggest philanthropists in the world. He held the position of the chairman of Tata group for 22 years between 1990 to 2012. He is still the head of the NGOs and other organizations of the Tata group which is related to social work. He has received a Padma Vibhushan & Padma Bhushan award from the government of India.

Early Life of Ratan Tata

Ratan Tata was born on December 28, 1937, in Bombay. He is the son of Naval Tata. His mother, Sooni, and Ratan’s father separated in 1948.  He was raised by his grandmother, Navajibai Tata.  Later she adopted Ratan Tata. He did his schooling at Bishop Cotton School, Shimla.

He did his graduation the college Riverdale County School in New York. He started handling the Tata management in the 1970s. JRD Tata retired in 1991 & Rata was declared his successor. Under his leadership revenue of Tata group increased up to 40 times and profit increased by 50 times.

Career of Ratan

He was declared the head of the Tata group in 1991 and the company grow exponentially under his leadership. He acquired the companies like Tetley, Jaguar, Land Rover & Corus. This made Tata an internationally recognized company and now it has spread its operation over 100 countries. Tata resigned from the post of chairman in 2012. Cyrus was supposed to be the next chairman but the Legal division of the company didn’t allow him to take over the management.

At last, after a long tussle and hustle, Natarajan Chandrasekaran was appointed as the new chairman in 2017. But Cyrus filed a case and it was held by NCLAT that he has to reappointed as the chairman.

Controversies

Even after being such a gentleman and humble person, Ratan Tata has been involved in a few controversies. When the Nano manufacturing plant has to be set up in Singur it met a widespread protest. People accused the government of forcefully acquiring their land for the plant. Ratan Tata was forced to shift the plant to Gujarat. Nira Radia Tapes leaks were another incident where Ratan Tata’s name surfaced.

Nira Radia was an infamous corporate lobbyist and his conversation with many powerful figures was leaked & Ratan Tata was one of them. Tata group went to court to stop those tapes to be televised by Indian Media.
