TV shows often don’t show us the difficulties of maintaining adult friendships, which many people in their 20s and 30s actually go through. But SonyLiv’s new show Raat Jaawan Hai fills that gap. The show is directed by Sumeet Vyas (known for projects like Permanent Roommates and English Vinglish). It follows three friends: Radhika (Anjali Anand), Suman (Priya Bapat) and Avinash (Barun Sobti), as they try to keep their friendship alive.
Story
The three friends are now grown up and busy with their families and work. Earlier, they could plan vacations to places like Goa without any hassle, but now most of their time is spent trying to match each other’s schedules. They plan play dates for their kids, but can’t even watch a movie themselves. At the start of the show, you expect the three friends to meet for a movie, but when they don’t, you understand their troubles.
Suman’s husband Sattu (Vikram Singh Chauhan) is a sweet guy who spends most of his time in the office. The two have trouble spending time together as their child keeps waking up at night. Avinash, on the other hand, is a stay-at-home dad who is often angry as his wife is busy in the corporate world.
The show’s lead character Radhika is married to a physiotherapist (Priyansh Jora). Though her husband is a bit weird, he cares for Radhika. Radhika decides to throw herself into a new job amidst household responsibilities. The characters of “Raat Jawaan Hai” seem endearing and genuine. The show is light-hearted, which makes you laugh as well as emotional. The friendship between the three lead characters seems real and that is the biggest strength of the show.
Writing and Direction
The supporting cast, like Priyansh Jora, Vikram Singh Chauhan and Hasleen Kaur, have also done justice to their roles. The show is divided into eight episodes, but at times, it can feel long. Perhaps it could have been made better as a film. Still, each episode raises a specific issue, like parenthood fatigue, lack of intimacy, and trying to balance taking care of your children.
What’s good, what’s not?
The best part about the show is that it portrays the challenges of parenthood in a very real way. People struggle to find a balance between their kids and themselves after becoming parents. “Raat Jawaan Hai” is the story of three friends who stay up late to take care of their kids and try to keep their friendship alive with each other. The show has a bit of a “TVF” vibe to it, i.e. light-hearted and fun. The show is also for parents, would-be parents and those who want to understand this phase.”Raat Jawaan Hai” is now streaming on SonyLiv.
