Sullivan taught Keller language, reading, and writing. After studying at both specialist and mainstream schools, Keller went to Radcliff College of Harward University and became the first deaf and blind person to get a bachelor’s Degree in Arts.
The early life of Hellen
In the beginning, Keller’s life was as beautiful and innocent as some other children. But her life took a turn and at the age of 19 months, she developed an illness that left her with blindness and deafness. Naturally, Helen’s parents were concerned for her future. As she grew into a young girl, she became increasingly frustrated with her inability to communicate.
In 1887, Anne Sullivan met Helen and her family. Anne Sullivan was a determined, young teacher who had lived with blindness herself until undergoing successful surgery. Anne taught Helen proper behavior in everyday situations along with academic lessons. After some time, Anne began to teach Helen the alphabet by fingerspelling the sign language letters into her palm. Soon, Helen learned to read Braille, write, and even started trying to speak.
