Advancements in surgeries have led to the development of minimally invasive surgeries whichoffer several benefits, which are equally safe and effective. Advanced Robotic-Assisted Breast Axillo Insufflated Thyroidectomy (RABIT ) is one such surgery for treating thyroid tumors and cysts.
Dr Sandeep Nayak, leading onco-surgeon specializing in laparoscopy and robotic surgeries in treating cancers at the MACS Clinic, Bangalore has pioneered in a painless and scarless surgery to treat thyroid cancer known as Robotic-Assisted Breast-axillo Insufflate Thyroidectomy (RABIT ).
The role of traditional surgery to treat thyroid cancer required a long scar in the neck region leading to a nasty scar lasting for a lifetime. These scars would be 10 to 15 centimeters long causing great deal of embarrassment to the patients. Such patients feel less confident and wary of stepping out in the public. They would resort to spend great amounts of money on scar removal through laser or attempt to hide the scars using scarves, dupattas, stoles and/or high neck or turtle neck shirts and tops.
Robotic-Assisted Breast-axillo Insufflate Thyroidectomy (RABIT )has proved to be a boon to thyroid cancer patients with its ample benefits. As Dr Sandeep Nayak suggests RABIT enables new, modern and much better approach to perform a scar-free thyroidectomy. This surgery involves the use of an advanced Da Vinci robotic machine which allows surgical access to the tumor through incisions sized 0.8 to two centimeters in the armpit.
Through these incisions, the surgeon and his team can access both the lobes and the lymph nodes via a single docking platform of the Da Vinci robotic machine. The outcome of the advanced Robotic-Assisted Breast-axillo Insufflate Thyroidectomy (RABIT ) is likely to be excision of the thyroid nodules leaving either a minimally visible or a hidden scar in the armpit.
Dr Sandeep Nayak concludes amongst all the thyroid patients, especially the young ones prefer the RABIT approach as it not only cures them of thyroid nodules without affecting their confidence or self-esteem as it is nearly a scarless and a minimally invasive procedure. On the other hand, the surgeons are satisfied with the optimal post-operative results and the outcome.
RABIT enables ease in performing difficult and complicated cancer surgeries through small incisions which earlier required large sized incisions accompanied high risks. The da Vinci robotic machine allows the surgeon to detect the smallest of nodules through its better vision quality and the surgeon can comfortably proceed with the surgery using the robotic arms.
About Thyroid Cancer
Patients with aswelling in front of the neck or thyroid should seek immediate checkup and thyroid nodules are detected through an ultrasound of the neck. If any abnormalities are detected, the nodules may have to be removed. Also, such patients can complain of breathing and swallowing issues, persistent hoarse cough, swelling in the neck, changes in the voice, and so on if the thyroid nodule is very large.
