Prateek Kuhad is a singer-songwriter and musician from India who creates independent music in Hindi and English. He is primarily known for the song “cold/mess.”
PRATEEK KUHAD EARLY LIFE
Kuhad was born into a Hindu Jat household in Jaipur, Rajasthan, and has two sisters. He began songwriting in his late teens after learning to play the guitar at 16. He graduated from the Maharaja Sawai Man Singh Vidyalaya in Jaipur. He later studied math and economics at New York University before relocating to Delhi to pursue a full-time musical career.
PRATEEK KUHAD CAREER
Prateek Kuhad returned to India after graduating from New York University, recording two EPs before releasing his debut album. He also inked a publishing agreement with Cutcraft Music in Los Angeles. In 2020, Kuhad became the first Indian to sign with the American record company Elektra Records. Kuhad found Elliott Smith’s music at NYU, and it had a significant effect on him. He subsequently found other songwriters, including Bob Dylan and Woody Guthrie, and younger musicians, such as Laura Marling and Fleet Foxes. These musicians motivated him to improve his guitar skills and create tunes. These had enormous effects on him. Kuhad has always felt at ease conversing in English and Hindi and has written in both languages. Due to Jaipur’s lack of internet access during his childhood, he mostly listened to Indian pop and Bollywood music, with only sporadic exposure to Western music. He is also claimed to have been influenced by a boy with the same name as him whose voice was terrific during a visit to UP. Lucky Ali also influenced him. Kuhad’s primary instrument is the acoustic guitar, but he also plays the piano and electric guitar. Mostly, his music tends toward the Americana and folk genres, with acoustic tones and unique song patterns. Us Weekly described his music as “beautifully haunting,” and BrooklynVegan described his voice as “angelic.” He primarily writes about love, relationships, and his experiences, with ambiguous lyrics providing room for interpretation.
