One of the first things that any car owner wishes to experience is the thrill of taking the car out for a drive. Tips to follow when you are heading out for a long drive

  1. Get thorough servicing done – A proper car servicing ensures you catch any issues before they arise. A properly serviced car has a lesser chance of breaking down. Servicing of the car also ensures all the points in the car you wouldn’t think of checking are checked too. Get the servicing done from a known and trusted garage, and be sure of the quality.
  2. Ensure your policy can cover any situation – A long drive entails different terrains, regions, weather conditions, traffic conditions, and so on. While you may try your best to avoid any accidents on the road, unforeseen circumstances may cause damage to your car. In such cases, one thing that is sure to get you out of trouble is a car insurance policy. Not only does it ensure that you are helped in case of financial obligations, but also has options to offer you roadside assistance and other such features. You can get your car repaired and get it back as good as new thanks to the benefits of car insurance
  3. Evaluate the amount of luggage loaded in the car – Cars are built to carry heavy loads but overloading the car with luggage is a bad idea. It not only puts pressure on wheels and the engine, but it also becomes too tough to park it on slopes or take it uphill in such cases. In case there is an impact it becomes harder to control the car too.
  4. Check the paperwork you may need beforehand – If you are planning to cross the state borders, you will definitely be stopped at check posts and asked for the proper paperwork. Other than this, traffic police in the city can also demand your papers at any time and it is wise to make sure you are carrying all of them with you. The documents you must have are – your driving license, car insurance policy (at least third party insurance), pollution certificate, and registration certificate of your car. These may be checked by any traffic police if they suspect infractions.

  1. Map out a route – While there are plenty of navigational options to guide you on your journey, it is always better to check out the route beforehand and follow the same. There may be a disruption in the signal along the way, or you end up following the wrong path. Another advantage of mapping a route before is you can flag places to eat, fuel up, and even stay along the way giving you a clear picture of what to expect along the road.
  2. Keep some spares and tools handy – A flat tire is a side effect of long drives. Keep some tools and spares handy to ensure you are covered if stranded in the middle of nowhere. This includes some extras apart from the ones that come as a part of your tool kit. A tire inflator and torch are examples of such items.
  3. Prepare a list to keep yourself alert – Driving can get monotonous very fast. Keep a checklist for yourself that you can refer to when you start feeling sleepy. You can list things like taking a break, listening to music, calling someone, playing a game, and other such things to make sure you stay alert while driving.
  4. Check the weather conditions en route – The weather conditions are essential, especially when you are driving through the monsoon. Rains can make driving conditions dangerous and reduce visibility. The same is the case with fog, and if you are going on a drive in the mountains, then the whole drive can be tricky, and you need to exercise caution.

  1. Carry essentials in a separate bag – Things like water, snacks, towels, tissues, and sanitisers, should be carried in a bag kept separately. These should be easily accessible and not buried under a mountain of baggage. Other essentials you deem necessary for you should be at arm’s reach from the driver’s seat or from the passenger’s seat if you are travelling with a companion.
  2. Carry a first aid kit – A first aid kit is a backup in case anything goes wrong. Keep the basic items required to bandage and secure a wound or a burn. Cotton, bandages, antiseptic liquid, alcohol swabs, gauze, tape, band-aid, and a cream should suffice.

You can look to enjoying your long drive, when you have taken precautions to overcome any issues, with peace of mind. These tips will ensure the safety of the car as well as the passengers and the drivers. Keep this in mind the next time you go on a long drive.
