Early Life and Education Captain Anshuman Singh was born in 1997 in Bardeeha Dalpat, a small village in the Deoria district of Uttar Pradesh, India. From a young age, he exhibited extraordinary academic potential and a deep sense of responsibility. He completed his schooling at the prestigious Rashtriya Military School, Chail, Himachal Pradesh. His determination and aptitude earned him admission to the Armed Forces Medical College (AFMC) in Pune, where he rigorously trained in military medicine, high-altitude medical care, and trauma management.

His academic journey was a testament to his commitment to excellence. After completing his MBBS, he pursued a year-long internship in Agra, extended due to the challenges posed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Despite these difficulties, Captain Anshuman Singh remained unwavering in his dedication to his medical career.

Military Career In March 2020, Captain Anshuman Singh joined the Punjab Regiment’s 26th Battalion as a Regimental Medical Officer (RMO). His posting to the Chandan Complex under Operation Meghdoot marked a challenging phase of his career. The treacherous terrain of the Siachen Glacier, combined with harsh weather conditions at altitudes exceeding 19,000 feet, underscored the critical importance of his role in ensuring the health and safety of the deployed soldiers.

Personal Life Captain Anshuman Singh married Smriti Singh, an accomplished structural engineer, on February 10, 2023. The couple’s plans for the future reflected their shared aspirations, including building a home and starting a family. Tragically, their dreams were cut short by Captain Anshuman Singh’s untimely demise.

Heroic Sacrifice at Siachen On July 19, 2023, a devastating fire broke out at the Chandan Dropping Zone ammunition depot. Displaying exceptional bravery, Captain Anshuman Singh rushed out of his fiberglass shelter upon hearing the explosion. Understanding the imminent danger, he prioritized the safety of his fellow soldiers over his own life.

His quick thinking and resolute action led to the rescue of four to five soldiers from the rapidly burning fiberglass huts. Despite the hazardous conditions, he attempted to retrieve a medical aid box from his shelter. Tragically, intense flames and strong winds engulfed the shelter, and Captain Anshuman Singh could not be saved. His unparalleled courage and sense of duty remain an enduring inspiration.

Posthumous Recognition On July 5, 2024, Captain Anshuman Singh was posthumously awarded the Kirti Chakra, India’s second-highest peacetime gallantry award. The honor was received by his wife, Smriti Singh, and mother, Manju Singh, from President Droupadi Murmu in a solemn ceremony in New Delhi.
