Why did he refuse
Devdas was released in the year 2002. This movie made Shahrukh Khan’s career even better. This movie is still included in the list of best movies. Shahrukh told that this is the story of a boy who is a drunkard, does not make a promise to a girl and goes away. At that time, at my age, I did not find anything special in it and that is why I refused to do this movie.
What did Sanjay Leela Bhansali say, after which Shahrukh got ready
Director Sanjay Leela Bhansali had thought of keeping Shahrukh Khan for this film. After Shahrukh Khan refused, he decided not to make this film. At the Locarno Film Festival, Shahrukh himself told why he said yes to this movie after 1 year of refusing.
Shahrukh said- Devdas is a very special film, it was a film that my mother loved to watch. My father also used to talk about it. It is one of the best classic films remade in the country.
The actor further says- Many years later when Sanjay Leela Bhansali ji came and he said that he wants me to become Devdas, I said, ‘No, he is a loser, a drunkard, I am too cool to become Devdas. But before leaving, he said just one thing which is still in my mind. He said, ‘If you were not there, I would not have made this film because your eyes are like Devdas.’ For a year he did not cast anyone. Then we met and I said yes to the film.
Don’t do such roles where women are degraded
Shahrukh says about working with Aishwarya and Madhuri- I had the privilege of working with Aishwarya and Madhuri in the same film. Playing this character was one of the most wonderful experiences of my life. I don’t like to play such characters which degrade women. I didn’t want him to be liked in the film because he disrespects a woman. And is not dedicated to her. I wanted him to come across as a person who is spineless and not a person whom you can idolize.
Shahrukh said- Bhansali has made the film beautifully, but I don’t think anyone would want to become Devdas. This is not a character that you keep in your mind. I just didn’t want a character who cannot stand up for women on their issues to become popular in a different way. I think I did that.
